KAPPA III Principal’s Corner – April 24

I hope you enjoyed your weekend.  The New York State Math exam will be administered next week, on May 2-4, 2017.  Once again, the test will be untimed.  It is important that students eat a hearty breakfast and arrive on time every day.  Research shows that the best way for teens to reduce stress before the test is to exercise.  Students are also encouraged to engage in fun activities such as drawing, listening to music, reading and spending reasonable time with friends and family.  Please use the testing strategies we distributed during the student led conference last month.  Students should continue to focus on their studies at home and practice study skills.
Our After-School and Saturday Academy will conclude this week.  We will offer tutoring for all students that are failing or at risk of failing for the year.  Please monitor your child’s grades through Skedula, on a weekly basis.  In addition, I strongly suggest that you call or schedule an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss progress.  All scholars will enter the final marking period and we will begin to review portfolios, projects and final exams for consideration of promotion.  We have our final college trip of the year tomorrow, April 25, 2017 to St. John’s University.
Some of our students will be participating in the AMS Pi5NY Math Competition this Saturday, April 29th, 2017.  We had tryouts this past Friday and students will be selected this week and given a permission slip.  PTA held a meeting this past Saturday to discuss nominations, however due to low participation they were not able to hold nominations.  PTA will have another meeting May 20th, 2017 from 10-12pm.  We are asking families to please attend as they are holding nominations and elections.  Your participation is important to us.
We have many trips set up for the month of May.  Please review the calendar next week and stay abreast of all activities happening in our school.  Monday, May 1st we will have a nutrition class that will consist of eight sessions and participants will receive a certificate upon completion of all sessions.  Certification can be used to obtain employment at a daycare center.  All nutrition classes will be given in Spanish.  On May 6th, 2017 we will host a Health Fair in our school yard, more information will be sent home.
Respectfully,
Ms. Jean Colon, Principal
